Wireless Web Cameras
Technology has come a long way in the last few years and one area in particular where the improvement has been phenomenal is with web cameras. The new generation of web cameras have pretty much relegated the days of the fuzzy picture, caused by low resolution, to the history books. Today if you are so inclined you can easily find cameras that will produce resolution as high as 640×480 and higher if need be.

Wireless technology has also caught up with these little gems. You can now purchase wireless web cameras at very affordable prices. These little marvels of technology will send a video stream through walls, floors and ceilings with their limits of transmission being governed by their placement and your receiver.
The addition of a new wireless web camera can open up a whole world of options to you that didn’t exist before. Such as:
- Are you going on vacation? Just leave the camera setup with the motion detector on and if something moves in its coverage area while you are gone an email will be sent to you. Then just log in from any computer in the world and view what went down.
- Having problems with vandalism? Just use the same setup as before and you will catch the little buggers in the act. The police love videos.
- Or maybe you just want to cut the cord on your present web cam so you can place it wherever the spirit moves you, in this case you will love going wireless. At least one of the cameras offer bluetooth compatability.
Quite frankly once you go wireless you are only limited by your imagination as to where you can place it.
Before you run out and buy a new wireless web camera though you will want to make sure that the unit you want to purchase matches its intended use. This tech comes in many flavors, black and white video, color video, built in microphones, motion sensors infrared vision, indoor and outdoor. So as you can see the choice may not be as simple as it seems.
Some important things you might want to consider are:
- Location, location, location, don’t use an indoor camera to monitor the dog run in the back yard. The elements are not friendly to indoor cameras. Please also be aware of any privacy issues when installing any wireless web cam.
- Most cameras require a power plug near by, some others though come with a rechargeable power pack that will provide 4 hours of continuous power.
- How secure is the network? Since this system is wireless and on the airwaves you might not want other folks being able to tap in on the cameras output any time they want. It has been noted that hackers can tap into some of these units from up to a 1/4 mile away.
- Can you record events on your computer or VCR? Some units sport slots for flash chips for easier recording.
- Can you log in from anywhere to view what your web cam is seeing? This can be very handy feature when you are on vacation.
No matter which unit you decide to buy though I’m sure you will be coming up with a never ending list of uses for it. Cutting the cord can be very beneficial.
Happy viewing!
